Originally released for the Dreamcast in 2000 and 2001, Shenmue I & II is an open-world action-adventure combining jujitsu, investigation, RPG elements and unforgettable mini-games. It pioneered many aspects of modern video games, including open-world city exploration, and was the game that invented the time-limited event, better known as the Quick Time Event (QTE). It was one of the first games to feature a persistent open world with day and night cycles, changing weather patterns, opening and closing shops and NPCs who move around at will. Its epic, captivating story and dynamic world have created a generation of die-hard fans, and the game is often listed as one of the "greatest games of all time".A quest for revenge.

In 1986, young jujitsu artist Ryo Hazuki returns to the dojo of his father, Iwao Hazuki, who is murdered in front of him by a Chinese man called Lan Di. Lan Di has stolen a mysterious artefact known as the Dragon Mirror. Ryo vows to avenge his father's death and sets out to track down Lan Di.

The first game in the Shenmue series tells the story of Ryo's journey as he travels around Yokosuka in Japan to gather clues about his father's murder, and must confront ruthless gangsters along the way.

In the sequel Shenmue II, Ryo's quest continues across the seas to Hong Kong, China. Ryo explores more of the criminal underworld and meets martial arts masters who will help him on his journey and offer crucial information about his father's murder. Ryo must then unravel the mysteries of the Dragon Mirror, which his father had kept secret.
