In 1986, an incident occurred at the Chernobyl nuclear power station and the Soviet authorities established a 30-kilometre exclusion zone around the contaminated region. In 2006, a second explosion occurred. Devastating everything in its path, the limits of the containment zone were pushed back. From the epicentre of the explosion site, mutant creatures and strange energy sources suddenly appeared. The army takes control of the situation and establishes a cordon sanitaire with orders to shoot on sight at anything that might enter or leave the zone.

The year is 2012. Strange objects from the 'zone' are said to contain a strange energy and are being sold at a premium. This activity attracts mercenaries and adventurers of all kinds. They are known as S.T.A.L.K.E.R.s.
