About this content

Sid Meier's Civilization V: Gods and Kings is the first expansion pack for Civilization V, voted PC Game of the Year in 2010. This pack covers a period from the founding of your first Pantheon of Gods and the spread of your religion across the world, to the deployment of your spies into enemy cities to steal information and technology.
As you travel through time, you'll interact with new types of city-states, take part in new city-state quests and global competitions, and learn to master new combat systems, both naval and land-based. Civilization V: Gods and Kings also includes nine new civilizations, nine new wonders, three original scenarios and dozens of new buildings, units and technologies that will give players even more opportunities to expand their empire and dominate the world.

Features:

      • An extension of an epic game: The main game experience has been greatly enriched with the addition of new technologies (such as the combined army), 27 new units (such as the powerful machine gun, which can attack within a radius of one square), 13 new buildings (such as air raid shelters) and nine new wonders (see below). You'll also find many new buildings and units in the four new scenarios.
      • New civilisations: This expansion pack features nine new civilisations, including Carthage, the Netherlands, the Celts and the Mayans (it is 2012, after all), all with their own characteristics, units and buildings. It also includes 9 new heads of state, such as William I, Prince of Orange, Boadicea and Pacal the Great.
      • Religion: Righteous peoples in search of faith can found a Pantheon of the Gods. As your faith grows, you can generate illustrious prophets who, from simple beliefs, create a religion that you can customise and improve as you see fit. Will you accept other religions, or is there only one true faith for you? Would you rather favour gold, the arts or the army? Faiths can even unlock buildings exclusive to followers of your religion. Illustrious prophets, missionaries and inquisitors help you spread your beliefs to other lands and forge alliances with like-minded city-states and civilisations.
      • Improved diplomacy and espionage: Set up embassies in foreign courts to foster closer ties with them (or conduct clandestine operations). As religions gain influence in a world entering the Renaissance, you unlock your first spy (with more to come). Send him to monitor foreign countries, steal advanced technologies from your most powerful or intelligent rivals, or interfere in alliances with city-states. Anything you do can have diplomatic repercussions if discovered, so be careful.
      • City-states: Two new types have been added, mercantile city-states and religious city-states, to offer new advantages. The quest system has been completely revamped to reduce the importance of gold and add a series of new quests that serve the game's narrative, as well as making diplomatic victory a more varied option. Join forces with Marrakech to access unique luxury resources! The Vatican City and Jerusalem are holy cities that play a major role in religion.
      • World Domination: The battle for world domination is now more dynamic than ever. The Gods and Kings expansion features an overhaul of the combat system and artificial intelligence, to provide a better balance in the composition of armies. This new system allows your units to hold out longer, so you can make more considered tactical decisions without having to worry about losing everything by chance.
      • Naval Combat: Your navy now consists of two types of ship, for close combat and ranged attack, making coastal cities vulnerable to surprise naval attacks. What's more, all embarked units now benefit from the Defensive Boat promotion, and can stack with a naval unit for improved protection. Add to that the appearance of a new illustrious admiral, and sailing the high seas just got a whole lot more dangerous!
      • New Wonders: There are 9 new wonders with new effects, including Neuschwanstein Castle, the Great Mosque of Djenné, the Terracotta Army, Internet censorship and the Hubble Space Telescope.
      • Three New Scenarios:
        • The Middle Ages: Transform your medieval kingdom into one of the greatest nations of Renaissance Europe, while fending off invasions from the Mongols and Ottoman Turks and taking part in the Wars of Religion, from the Crusades to the Reformation!
        • The fall of Rome: Control either Eastern or Western Rome and try to repel the barbarians, unless you prefer to lead the barbarians themselves.
        • Empire of the Misty Skies: Build airships and huge tractor-like tanks from the exclusive technology tree in this sci-fi meets Victorian aesthetic scenario, and use them to expand your empire across this pre-industrial world.
